The Oriole Clan

Though they often toiled in relative obscurity, the Tsi family has the longest history of swordcraft in the Empire, dating to shortly after Rokugan’s very founding. Before they became the Oriole, they were a humble ronin family of blacksmiths -- but in the 12th century, their skills were finally acknowledged and they were granted a clan of their very own. The Oriole have never engaged in politics, content simply to master their craft, and adapting to a role in the Empire of Emerald Stars was easy for the Oriole; they adjust to new techniques and technologies quickly, and thus rapidly became the undisputed masters of forging radiant katanas, just as they had traditional steel ones in the past.

Their planet, called Camden Yards after a Thrane blacksmith who joined the clan during the Yodotai War of the 13th century, is an arid, dry world, rich in specific rare components needed for radiant weapon construction. Their possession of this world is the sole source of some conflict with other Clans -- the Emperor granted them the planet over the protestations of the Crab and Lion, both of whom wanted it for themselves. It was the Phoenix who stepped in and pointed out that the finest blade artisans required access to the finest materials in order to fulfill their duty to the Emperor. In gratitude, many of the Tsi’s finest blades can now be found in the possession of the Shiba family.
